Biography

Solomon studied at various art schools, sequentially, Heatherley’s Art School, the Royal Academy Schools, the Munich Academy, and École des Beaux-Arts (under Alexandre Cabanel). Solomon also studied separately under Rev. S. Singer. He exhibited his first works as early as 1881, and showed at the Royal Academy, the New Gallery, and the Society of British Artists. In 1886, he became one of the founding members of the New English Art Club. In 1896, he became an associate of the Royal Academy, with full membership following in 1906, one of the few Jewish painters to do so. He joined, and became president of, the Royal Society of British Artists in 1919.

Art

Solomon’s painting was grounded in his influence from his teacher Alexandre Cabanel, but was also influenced by Frederic Leighton and Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Solomon painted mainly portraits to earn a living, but also painted dramatic, theatrical scenes from mythology and the bible on large canvasses. These scenes include some of his more popular paintings. One of Solomon’s most popular works was Samson (1887), depicting a scene from the biblical story of Samson and Delilah. This painting was praised for its use of multiple male nudes in active poses. Samson is one of few Solomon paintings on regular display, at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Some other Solomon paintings that have received significant attention include Ajax and Cassandra and The Birth of Love (1896).

Samson (1887)

Solomon became well-known as an innovative portrait artist by the time he painted Mrs. Patrick Campbell as ‘Paula Tanqueray’ (1894) and went on to paint a number of portraits of well-known people, including the architect Sir Aston Webb, and later in life, the royals King George V, Queen Mary, and Prince Edward (later King Edward VIII).

Solomon was also in demand as a book illustrator, particularly adventure books. In 1914, Solomon authored The Practice of Oil Painting and Drawing. During World War I, Solomon was a pioneer of camouflage techniques and painted camouflage on tanks and observation posts. He published a treatise on the subject in 1920.

“Feel Free” is the second single by British rapper Kano from his second studio album London Town, after “This Is the Girl”. The song features Blur and Gorillaz member Damon Albarn. The single reached #12 on the UK R&B singles chart but failed to reach the UK Top 75 Chart.

Music Video

The music video is black & white, and is set in the past, in 3 places: The streets of London, in a London cab and in a church with a kids choir, who are actually from Kano’s old school (where his mother still teaches). While in the cab, the video shows the London Eye. The lyrics interpolate the hook from Nas’ song “Made You Look” at one point while in the cab, which Nas says, “They shootin’! Aw made you look / You a slave to a page in my rhyme book”, which Kano changes to, “But I like to see them shut the McD’s / Cuz, they shootin’! Nah made you look / You a slave to a page in the cheque book”.

Kano performed the song at Electric Proms at London’s Jazz Café on October 27, and featured on BBC 2’s new music show ‘Sounds’ and on T4 in Channel 4.

The Very Best of Mick Jagger
(2007)

The Very Best of Mick Jagger, the first overview of Mick Jagger’s solo career, was released worldwide on 1 October 2007 and the following day in the United States on WEA/Rhino Records.

The collection includes singles, album tracks, and collaborations with John Lennon, David Bowie, Bono, Lenny Kravitz, Peter Tosh, Ry Cooder, David A. Stewart and Jeff Beck among others. It include three previously-unreleased songs:

  • “Too Many Cooks”, produced by John Lennon and recorded by Jagger in 1973 in Los Angeles. The track features guitarists Danny Kortchmar and Jesse Ed Davis, keyboardist Al Kooper, bassist Jack Bruce, drummer Jim Keltner and, on backing vocals, singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson. Bill Wyman was present at the session but did not play on the track.
  • “Checking Up on My Baby”, recorded in 1992 with L.A. blues band, The Red Devils.
  • “Charmed Life”, recorded while Jagger was working on Wandering Spirit with producer Rick Rubin. Jagger had sketched it out (with his daughter Karis Jagger on backing vocals), but then decided the track didn’t fit with the rest of the album. The version on Very Best is remixed by producer Ashley Beadle. The song was also released as a promo single with various remixes, and reached the Top 20 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Singles chart in early 2008.

A special edition with DVD was also released with more than 72 minutes of content, includes an extensive interview with Mick Jagger from early/mid 2007, nine videos, and extras.

Jagger has promoted the album through interviews including a special for Rolling Stone , a comprehensive Q&A with fans on the BBC web site and TV appearances. He also re-launched his web site with audio, video, photos and more information about this compilation and his solo work in general.

The album debuted in the British chart at #57 with sales of nearly 4,000 copies and in the American chart at #77 selling 11,846 copies during the first week.

Jump to: navigation, search

James Alexander George Smith McCartney (30 June 19459 May 1980) also known as J. A. G. S. McCartney was a politician from the Turks and Caicos Islands. He was the island territory’s first Chief Minister and held that position from August 1976 until 9 May 1980, when he died in a plane crash over New Jersey.

McCartney was born in Grand Turk to an accomplished Jamaican barrister, Harvey O. B. Fernandez McCartney and a Sunday school pianist, Sally McCartney, née Taylor of the Turks and Caicos. He was named after a prominent Jamaican barrister and distinguished legislator, James Alexander George Smith (1877 – 1942).

J.A.G.S. McCartney was the leader and founder of the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM), a grassroots organization established to address the many social and economic ills that had been pervasive throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands. A central goal of his was the attainment of self-determination for the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands. McCartney had particularly sought to mobilize the youth in the political process. A charismatic, dynamic and visionary figure, McCartney was determined to usher in a new Constitution that would foster and safeguard the rights of all Turks and Caicos Islanders, create new opportunities for citizens and advance the Country. Assuming office at age 31, McCartney remains one of the world’s youngest democratically elected leaders in history.

National Heroes Day, a holiday celebrated on the last Monday in May, commemorates the life of McCartney. Additionally, the Grand Turk International Airport is named in honour of him.
